Abigail Spanberger mentioned as an “Avenger” in Time Magazine.

Charlotte Alter, a writer with Time Magazine made an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to talk about the wave of women stepping up to run for office this year.  When Joe Scarborough asked her specifically about VA07, she mentioned Abigail as one of the four women running.  She is also on the cover!

Constituent Billboard: Repeal & Replace Rep. Brat

Concerned Citizens Virginia’s 7th district have banded together to draw attention to Congressman Dave Brat’s recent votes and public statements.  Many constituents who are concerned with Representative Brat’s alignment with President Trump have repeatedly tried to engage with him to voice their sentiment. He has responded by labeling those with whom he disagrees as the “hard-left.”  In response, beginning January 15, 2018, Concerned Citizens will voice their concerns via outdoor media along a commuter route on 10418 Hull Street in Chesterfield.

In this billboard, Concerned Citizens demonstrate that they are fed up with Rep. Brat selling them out to line the pockets of corporations and wealthy donors. He voted against improving the Affordable Care Act and helped pass the tax reform plan that provided an irresponsible, unfunded tax break to corporations and billionaires. He quipped, “billionaires can only buy so many houses and boats,” yet voted their interests anyway.

Concerned Citizens hope to raise funds to support ongoing expressions of concern across the District via outdoor, print, and social media between now and Election Day, raising issues related to Brat’s policy positions and ideology that are out of touch with the increasingly diverse population in his District.

What Brat Said. Week 2. 2018

John Fredericks Show, Tues. Jan.8, 2018.  After discussing how the government is going to fund itself, via CR or shutdown, the conversation turned to DACA.  He acknowledged that the DACA deal needed to be a bipartisan solution, and that they needed 8 Senate votes.  He intimated that because they needed those votes to pass a budget, those senators held disproportional power and said “this is not what you learned in 8th grade civics class.”  He then went on to call it the “illegal DACA’s” path to citizenry.  He stated that it was a $30 billion dollar bill that would increase entitlements and put pressures on schools.  He repeated the Politifact debunked talking point that if 800,000 DACA people are allowed in the country that will lead to chain migration of 20 million people and send a green light to the 8 billion people of the world who want to come live here.  I have never seen a citation that the good people of Luxumburg are chomping at the bit to move to the US.  He also discussion labor participation shortage, which is a real problem, but not necessarily for the reasons he cites:  able-bodied people need to get off welfare and work.  Other analyses has found that the opioid crisis is one of the driving forces of low labor participation rates.  When asked if he would compromise on DACA if the bill contained funding for a wall, he replied only if chain migration is ended along with the lottery system.

He then went on one of his new talking points that the MAIN STREAM MEDIA is not reporting on migration crisis in Sweden, France and the Netherlands, because they are leftists and 90% of them donated to Hilary.  Also threw in his opinion that THE LEFT has taken a HARD LEFT turn.  He also denounced the Senate as having a “cult-like” affinity for rules.

He gave himself credit for getting out to all 10 counties in the 7th and said that everyone is hiring, but HE TAUGHT COLLEGE FOR 20 YEARS and the kids don’t have the skills for the jobs.

He also stated that he only likes to do live interviews because after he upset Cantor he talked about the minimum wage for 20 minutes and all his talking points got clipped.  Apparently doesn’t seem to get the back and force of a free press.

Washington Journal, C-Span, 1/9/2018.  Repeated line that the US has $21 trillion in debt on the backs of kids – who don’t have lobbyists in DC (Apparently, he unaware of https://twitter.com/LittleLobbyists which was formed to save ACA funding for medically fragile kiddos)

Repeated talking point about need for welfare reform to entice “able-bodied” people to re-enter workforce.  Also repeated false DACA narrative?CIS report that if given a path to lawful standing, it would lead to 5-6 million people coming here, which, in turn, would displace 5 million potential American workers.

Need to get in a virtuous cycle.  I TAUGHT ECON FOR 20 YEARS.  Freshman kids don’t know what a business is.

When asked who will pay for the wall.  Brat replied that wall is trivial to welfare payments and that the wall would pay for itself over decade or so.

Bloomberg Politics 1/9/2018.  When asked if he could support DACA alone, Brt replied that the fundamental problem with that is that you send a green light to 8 billion people making $10,000 to come here and make $50,000.  When asked, “You don’t want DACA recipients to stay here?”  He replied, its not just about DACA.  You have to have a national system.  You keep coming back to welfare reform.  Tone is changing.  Able-bodied.  Entitlements are crowing out infrastructure.  When asked about riff between Trump & Bannon, he replied “yeah, well its been heard loud and clear.  It was 3 years, then it continues all the way through Bernie to Trump.  Blah blah.

Response to Trump shithole comment.

What Brat said. Week 1. 2018.

Brat started out the week, like he usually does, talking to John Fredericks on his radio show.  Here are a few excepts:  Cited immigration statistics from the Center for Immigration Studies, an organization that is anti-immigrant and publishes specious studies according to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Center_for_Immigration_Studies;

He stated labor market was in “chaos” due to “huge welfare problem” of able-body people basically sitting on their asses collecting up to $40,000/year.  However, SNAP benefits are extremely limited for people who are not disabled.  A simple google search will turn up a more nuanced reason male participation rates are low-the opiate addiction crisis.

When asked about whether he was going to have more town halls, he basically blamed his favorite bogeyman, “the left” for taking over town halls, but that he will try to have some.

When asked about Trump’s recent nuclear button comparison tweet w/ North Korea, he replied, “Well, we have to be very careful and professional in our rhetoric as leaders, etcetera.  At the same time, the left has been wrong on everything.”  You can visit other blog post about his insightful comments on Food Security at a recent NAACP meeting.

Stay tuned for a weekly round-up of Davisms! Culminating in him bringing his whole lexicon of word salad to a new occupation Nov. 7, 2018.

Dave Brat wants to take a lie detector test. About his relationship w/ Richard Spencer. At a meeting about Food Security.

Congressman Dave Brat spoke at a NAACP meeting in Henrico recently.  The evening’s topic at hand was Food Insecurity.  To that end, Terence Walker w/ the VCU Ram Pantry address the issue as the first speaker.  Then 7th district Congressman Dave Brat spoke.  But not about Food Insecurity.  Take a look and see:

As a reminder, Brat sent several 7th district constituents this letter dated August 4, 2017, a week before Neo-Nazis descended on Charlottesville, wreaking havoc, killing Heather Heyer and injuring dozens.  Mr. Brat had the opportunity, in advance, to disavow Richard Spencer and his fake “Institute”, but declined.  For someone who continually talks about attending Seminary (2 times in this video!), and the importance of ethics, his training did not, provide him the moral clarity to simply denounce this person – which a google search would reveal is a no-brainer.Spencerletter

The Year That Was in Dave Brat Quotes

Our own Congressional District Representative doesn’t exactly have the rhetorical flair as his puppeteer, Donald Trump, but he certainly used his limited lexicon to grab media headlines during 2017.  Brat gleefully slings his usual talking points on the flawlessness of free markets and the sins of the Democratic party – Progressive Caucus Budget, anybody?  What’s baffling is his silence around the lack of moral leadership demonstrated by the Republican party on certain topics.  There was no statement condemning Roy Moore, no statement denouncing Trump’s degrading comments about certain women, the press, international and national institutions, and white nationalism.  For someone who never misses an opportunity to bemoan the lack of ethical training in students and the low level of discourse in our civil discussions, this silence is more than telling.  Brat often uses his attendance at Princeton Seminary to give himself a standing to lecture others about ethics.  VA07 constituents are smart enough to see through this superficial veneer of morality masquerading as care.

The Truth is in Vegas

In a recent interview on Fox News, Dave Brat stated that the truth lies not with your elected representative, but with betters in Las Vegas. He backed up this statement by citing his oft mentioned background as having taught economics for 20 years. Not once, but two times! Funny that his seminary attendance did not come up with this Vegas talking point.
