What Brat said Week 4. 2018

1/22 Daily Beast.  Dave incorrectly asserts that there are 450 congressional districts in the country.  Sad -for someone who constantly maligns the business acumen of incoming college freshman to make such an obvious error when speaking about the structure of his own workplace and our government. “Lindsey Graham does not get to speak out on behalf of the country. That’s what’s wrong right now. That’s why we’re in a crisis,” Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) told The Daily Beast. “Now you’ve got majorities of one—Lindsey Graham—saying, ‘I have a deal.’ No you don’t. You don’t represent my district and you don’t represent 450 other districts. You have a deal you would like.”

1/23 NPR Brat repeated the disavowed notion that a singular solution for DACA leads to 10 million immigrants.

1/25 At CFA Society of Virginia 14th Annual Forecast Dinner in Richmond, Dave was in attendance as a guest.  He used the occasion to ask the speaker, Jeff Rosenberg a question.  When his question veered into lecture mode and went on too long, an attendee shouted “I thought you were going to be brief!”  It should also be noted that it was reported that the speaker was not a fan of the recent tax cut that Brat has been so enthusiastically reporting.

1/25 Breitbart.  Brat again hyper-inflates number of immigrants associated with granting a path of citizenship to DACA recipients.

Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) said the amnesty plan Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) are pushing in the Senate is not designed to legalize just the hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but will give amnesty to additional millions of illegal aliens.

“The current bill proposed by Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham is intentionally misleading,” Brat told Breitbart News.“It does not just include legal status for 700,000 DACA individuals, but also grants a path to citizenship for 3.2 million Dreamers and legal status for their parents as well.”

“In total, this proposed bill could effectively provide amnesty for as many as ten million individuals,” Brat said.

1/26  Conservative Review (CRTV).  Where Dave prioritizes Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio residents over his own VA07 constituents.  “Take the TV cameras out to Michigan and Pennsylvania and Ohio and ask the folks out there which plan they prefer,” he said.

1/26 Daily Signal phone interview.  Where Dave states his (Goodlatte’s) way is the best and only way, then compromise later and surmises that Trump is being a stooge and mishandled by staff.

Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va., told The Daily Signal in a phone interview that he is concerned about the framework.

“I think it was probably largely written by White House and Senate staff, who are looking at a compromise deal instead of looking at policy solutions that are thoughtful, and one immediate problem is that it gives amnesty not only to DACA, but people who didn’t even sign up to be DACA, and didn’t take advantage of that opportunity,” Brat said.

He thinks a bill proposed by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., which would give renewable legal status to DACA recipients for three years is a good starting place.

“The Senate has been steering this ship, and they’re just way off course, and so it’s time to get back to the Goodlatte proposal, and pass that through the House, and then compromise after you’ve got good policy in place,” Brat said.

1/26 During a visit to Germanna Community College’s Fredericksburg Center for Advanced Technology.  Dave again dinged the public education system stating that students should learn how to write a business memo in English class instead of getting an A+ in Geometry and wanting to get a sheepskin from Harvard – “that ain’t it.”  He also repeated his well worn theory that colleges teach that business is bad guy.  Mr. Brat needs to familiarize himself with VA SOLs which include economic and market curricula K-12.

1/27 Richmond-Times Dispatch Op-Ed.  Dave writes one of these every other week, generally pontificating on how he is turning the putrid ship of DC out of the swamp.  This week was no different.  Here are some excerpts and commentary:

“So four years ago I ran for office because, as a country, we needed to get back on the right track and return power to the people. I won that race despite having very little money and none of the elite endorsements.”  That may have been the case in his first race, but his campaign coffers are now filled with Koch Brothers and DeVos money.  You don’t get any more elite than that.

“I did not make it a campaign about personalities, but principles. In fact, I never hold my political opponents in contempt. While they have taken to the streets to protest, I continue to work hard because we can do better as a country.”  His first public commentary about contenders for the 7th Congressional District seat was  “Nancy Pelosi desperately wants another vote for her liberal agenda that puts more power in the hands of Washington. Dave looks forward to a debate of ideas about America’s future after the Democrats pick their liberal nominee next June.”  Couldn’t he have said something like Democracy is strong when more participate and I welcome the clash of ideas?  Why assume the nominee is liberal?  And why ding peaceful protesters?  People in the 7th District and around the country have an authentic concern with the debasement of the office of the President.  And does working hard include hours each week on right wing radio slinging falsehoods about immigration and blaming democrats for everything?

Routinely, I see politicians who view governing as a series of quick political plays made to garner support. I believe we need more conviction and integrity in politics. I will always support policies that are best for our district, not what is best for Washington.  No one embodies this characteristic more than Donald Trump.  If Dave truly believed we need more conviction and integrity in politics why remain silent on the weekly transgressions of standards of normalcy exhibited by POTUS?  Also, why not appear at a forum on rural issues “Our Voice Matters in Congress” being held in Blackstone in March.  Isn’t a rich discussion of the issues affecting rural voters good for our district?  Why does he prioritize going to Chick-Fil-A and Joey’s Hot Dogs over formal civic engagements where voters can hear from ALL the candidates?
