What Brat Said Weeks 14-17. 2018

April’s theme was the growing recognition of how increasingly vulnerable Dave Brat is in the upcoming mid-term elections.  The conservative Washington Times’s article cites several academic and political operatives, stating that “He now has a political fight ahead of him.” Dave Brat slammed by Opponents for losing touch with Constituency

And then there’s this WaPo piece: Is it Dave Brat’s turn for a shock?   Humorously summarized here by the DCCC:  ShotChaserLime

As best summarized by former VA GOP head Shaun Kenney, “Instead of mending fences, all he has done is pour napalm on the fences and roast marshmallows over the remains,” Kenney said.

On April 23, Brat appeared on the John Frederricks radio show and once again brought up the fact that the main stream media does not report on the Congressional Progressive Caucus Budget that has no chance of seeing the light of day in a Republican controlled congress.  Why keep waste time with this when there’s so many more important issues affecting VA07 constituents?  He also stated that the tax cuts would pay for themselves when the economy is growing at 3$, which he stated it was and that you never here from the main stream press.  Recent data from the Commerce Department adjusted Q12018 states that the economy is growing at 2.3%.

He also discussed Emmauel Macron’s visit and how he is trying to employ economic reforms by saying let’s fix this as opposed to THE LEFT in the US who just want to add more to a failed system.  It should be noted that many Democrats talk about fixing the AHA and that France has a universal health care system cited by the WHO as the best in the world at an average cost that’s less than the US.

Most disturbingly, he has been taking talking points from Tucker Carlson by stating we are not 100% certain that Assad was behind chemical attacks and so he should listen to constituents on how they feel about intervention in Syria sans AUMF.  Are we ever 100% certain about this sort of thing?  Why the interest in listening to constituents on this particular issue?

Additionally, Dave visited an economics program at Pocahontas and Brookland Middle Schools in Henrico county where he stated that he was given the opportunity to discuss economics and civics.  What he left out was the the students had earned an achievement and that Henrico has a very strong program teaching economics to the students.  Why make it about himself and leave out a nod to the other politician in attendance BOS Frank Thorton?

What Brat said weeks 7-11, 2018.

Feb. 7.  Brat again pivots to attacking Democrats when asked if he would support taxpayer funding for a military parade.  Pay for Parade?

March 2. An astute constituent discovered that Congressman Dave Brat’s campaign Twitter account had liked many controversial posts, including one that accused David Hogg, a Parkland School shooting survivor.  Brat’s office responded by removing all likes going back to August.  They released a statement saying that the tweets were liked by a staffer her thought she was using her personal account. “Dave did not approve the “liking” of these tweets, not would he have approved of liking the question about Mr. Hogg.” the statement read. “As has consistently been his position, neither Dave not his staff, support any alt-right views or individuals.” The statement went on to say that safeguards were being put in place so that this doesn’t happen again.

March 8.  WaPo article that discusses reasons Brat may be vulnerable in Nov. 2018 election. Brat Vulnerable?

March 9.  The Lee Brothers Radio Show.  When asked about Blue Wave coming, Mr. Brat responded “Keep talking about voting for Dave Brat.  Its all about me. . .”

March 14.  GOP’s side war on complacency.  Guess who’s one of their targets? Brat on GOP complacent list

March 16.  The day Dave Brat normalizes the Trump presidency.  Chedder

What Brat Said. Week 6. 2018

2/5/2018  Weekly appearance on John Fredericks Show.  Let’s just note that John Fredericks is not a constituent of Dave Brat’s.  Yet he makes an appearance every week while ignoring real constituents, such as ones in Blackstone wanting to have a discussion about rural issues.  One of the vanguards of Congressman Dave Brat’s appearances is that they are mostly one-sided, occurring in friendly formats.

Why not engage?

During this appearance Dave falsely claimed that none of the Steele Dossier has been corroborated.  In remarking on his appearance on Weekend Editionon NPR, he stated “They led me down democratic talking points . . .”.  He accused FBI elitist bureaucrats of ingratiating themselves to Power.  Really?  Any evidence of that?

Lots of discussion of the “Democrat” party rather than Democratic.  Rehashes his concept that 90% of mainstream media donated to Hillary Clinton.  Not sure of origin of this.”

“Our side fights like cub scouts”  because we actually believe in the rule of law.  Really? Does your President?  Then criticizes Democrats for not standing during SOTU, even though many Republicans did not stand regularly during Obama’s SOTU.  Since then, Potus has accused Democrats as being treasonous.  Autocratic much?

Then went on to say that the degree of reverence Americans give institutions is being abused.

What Brat Said. Week 5.

1/30  Dave Brat’s office releases a statement calling Trump’s immigration framework an “amnesty plan” that would not go well with voters in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania.  What about VA07 constituents?

2/4/2018 NPR Weekend Edition. Interview w/ Lulu Garcia-Navarro.  I can’t credibly capture the obfuscation and pivoting and non-answers that go on in this interview.  Read/listen for your self here: NPR Interview

What Brat said Week 4. 2018

1/22 Daily Beast.  Dave incorrectly asserts that there are 450 congressional districts in the country.  Sad -for someone who constantly maligns the business acumen of incoming college freshman to make such an obvious error when speaking about the structure of his own workplace and our government. “Lindsey Graham does not get to speak out on behalf of the country. That’s what’s wrong right now. That’s why we’re in a crisis,” Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) told The Daily Beast. “Now you’ve got majorities of one—Lindsey Graham—saying, ‘I have a deal.’ No you don’t. You don’t represent my district and you don’t represent 450 other districts. You have a deal you would like.”

1/23 NPR Brat repeated the disavowed notion that a singular solution for DACA leads to 10 million immigrants.

1/25 At CFA Society of Virginia 14th Annual Forecast Dinner in Richmond, Dave was in attendance as a guest.  He used the occasion to ask the speaker, Jeff Rosenberg a question.  When his question veered into lecture mode and went on too long, an attendee shouted “I thought you were going to be brief!”  It should also be noted that it was reported that the speaker was not a fan of the recent tax cut that Brat has been so enthusiastically reporting.

1/25 Breitbart.  Brat again hyper-inflates number of immigrants associated with granting a path of citizenship to DACA recipients.

Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) said the amnesty plan Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) are pushing in the Senate is not designed to legalize just the hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but will give amnesty to additional millions of illegal aliens.

“The current bill proposed by Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham is intentionally misleading,” Brat told Breitbart News.“It does not just include legal status for 700,000 DACA individuals, but also grants a path to citizenship for 3.2 million Dreamers and legal status for their parents as well.”

“In total, this proposed bill could effectively provide amnesty for as many as ten million individuals,” Brat said.

1/26  Conservative Review (CRTV).  Where Dave prioritizes Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio residents over his own VA07 constituents.  “Take the TV cameras out to Michigan and Pennsylvania and Ohio and ask the folks out there which plan they prefer,” he said.

1/26 Daily Signal phone interview.  Where Dave states his (Goodlatte’s) way is the best and only way, then compromise later and surmises that Trump is being a stooge and mishandled by staff.

Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va., told The Daily Signal in a phone interview that he is concerned about the framework.

“I think it was probably largely written by White House and Senate staff, who are looking at a compromise deal instead of looking at policy solutions that are thoughtful, and one immediate problem is that it gives amnesty not only to DACA, but people who didn’t even sign up to be DACA, and didn’t take advantage of that opportunity,” Brat said.

He thinks a bill proposed by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., which would give renewable legal status to DACA recipients for three years is a good starting place.

“The Senate has been steering this ship, and they’re just way off course, and so it’s time to get back to the Goodlatte proposal, and pass that through the House, and then compromise after you’ve got good policy in place,” Brat said.

1/26 During a visit to Germanna Community College’s Fredericksburg Center for Advanced Technology.  Dave again dinged the public education system stating that students should learn how to write a business memo in English class instead of getting an A+ in Geometry and wanting to get a sheepskin from Harvard – “that ain’t it.”  He also repeated his well worn theory that colleges teach that business is bad guy.  Mr. Brat needs to familiarize himself with VA SOLs which include economic and market curricula K-12.

1/27 Richmond-Times Dispatch Op-Ed.  Dave writes one of these every other week, generally pontificating on how he is turning the putrid ship of DC out of the swamp.  This week was no different.  Here are some excerpts and commentary:

“So four years ago I ran for office because, as a country, we needed to get back on the right track and return power to the people. I won that race despite having very little money and none of the elite endorsements.”  That may have been the case in his first race, but his campaign coffers are now filled with Koch Brothers and DeVos money.  You don’t get any more elite than that.

“I did not make it a campaign about personalities, but principles. In fact, I never hold my political opponents in contempt. While they have taken to the streets to protest, I continue to work hard because we can do better as a country.”  His first public commentary about contenders for the 7th Congressional District seat was  “Nancy Pelosi desperately wants another vote for her liberal agenda that puts more power in the hands of Washington. Dave looks forward to a debate of ideas about America’s future after the Democrats pick their liberal nominee next June.”  Couldn’t he have said something like Democracy is strong when more participate and I welcome the clash of ideas?  Why assume the nominee is liberal?  And why ding peaceful protesters?  People in the 7th District and around the country have an authentic concern with the debasement of the office of the President.  And does working hard include hours each week on right wing radio slinging falsehoods about immigration and blaming democrats for everything?

Routinely, I see politicians who view governing as a series of quick political plays made to garner support. I believe we need more conviction and integrity in politics. I will always support policies that are best for our district, not what is best for Washington.  No one embodies this characteristic more than Donald Trump.  If Dave truly believed we need more conviction and integrity in politics why remain silent on the weekly transgressions of standards of normalcy exhibited by POTUS?  Also, why not appear at a forum on rural issues “Our Voice Matters in Congress” being held in Blackstone in March.  Isn’t a rich discussion of the issues affecting rural voters good for our district?  Why does he prioritize going to Chick-Fil-A and Joey’s Hot Dogs over formal civic engagements where voters can hear from ALL the candidates?

What Brat said (& did). Week 3. 2018

1/15/2018  Martin Luther King Day.  The day after giving an interview to The Daily Caller, a web publication that has posted articles by Jason Kessler, the White Supremacist who organized Charlottesville Neo-Nazi rally, Brat posted an appeal on his FB page to heed Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to replace hatred and racism with love.  Then he went to the VA State Senate Committee on Courts and Justice to congratulate them on not passing a Universal background check bill. BackgroundChecks

Then he spoke at pro-2A rally organized by VA Citizen Defense League and said:

Earlier in the day, he did his weekly constitutional w/ John Fredericks.  He repeated his same talking points from CIS about DACA and immigration leading to 8 billion people wanting to come here.  He said he gets fact-checked by NY Time (actually it was Politifact – operated by the Tampa Bay Times), but that NY Time published same data.  Then went on to say that its an “amazing strange day in leftist media land.”  He also said that it was Durbin and Graham fault that Goodlatte’s bill was not being moved forward.  He ended with “THE LEFT wants a fantasy-land where they say Judeo-Christian tradition doesn’t work, rule of law and police are bad, and free markets and business are bad.  Americans need to start processing what THE LEFT (which I guess is different from the violent alt/hard left mentioned earlier) is saying.  Maybe, but we are processing what you’re saying and a lot of it is insulting.  We know you went to seminary, taught econ for 20 years, have all the answers, but constantly degrading THE LEFT is intellectually dishonest.

Tuesday, 1/16/18Could be a record in terms of media appearances in one day – 5!

Fox News. Highlights:  Repeated oft-spouted line about From Trump all the way through Bernie . . .  New line of attack on Senate:  “Senate has rolled us on everything this year.”  The Durbin bill w/ Lindsay Graham for example is not only DACA, its DACA+ and the folks at home should get ready if they have their way.  Get ready how one wonders?  Refugee camps?  White folks doing lawn work? 7-11 closings?

When asked about his 2018 mid-term elections, he replied, “There’s definitely a wave coming.  A wave hit VA.  We have to get our act together.”  Interviewer said, “And they’re coming after you hard.  We’ve looked at all the ads and a lot of people want your seat.”  check for yourself here:  Dave looks nervous at the end.  Fox News Interview

CNN, interview with John Berman and Poppy Harlow.  I TAUGHT ECON FOR 20 YEARS.  WI worked at the World Bank, with the poorest of the poor, sub-saharan Africa.  It was just Martin Luther King.  (yes, that was an utterance, no transition phrase)  If you go to London now, Paris, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, they’re being devastated.  They have total chaos.  They have parts where the police can’t go.  We’re approaching that, right.  We have sanctuary cities.  We have states where the law doesn’t apply anymore.  We’re seeing the beginning trickles of the European End Game.  When people see what its like not to live with police in their communities, they’re not going to like that.

Sandy Rios, American Family Radio.  Big new player on the block that the American people aren’t seeing is the Senate.  If Democrats are involved, you’re going to end up with a Lindsay Grham/Dick Durbin bill that doesn’t do anything and the American people and Republican Party will be in peril if we do that.  Need to push Goodlatte bill – its got an end to chain migration.  This is the compromise.  Those bipartisan bills are not bipartisan, they’re Democratic bills.  Also, we’re increasingly seeing the addition of the made up word “plussing up”, which made an appearance here and in last few interviews.  “plussing-up” is usually used in reference to the military or CR bill.

When asked to comment on his own upcoming race in 2018, he acknowledged that 3 HofD districts flipped in his district, as well as Chesterfield county.  Said “hopefully blue wave will start to subside (once benefits of tax bill hits people’s pocket book). “We’ve got to do more.  That’s why I’m emphasizing the failure of the Senate.”

The Wilkow Majority.- Sirius XM  Introduction of nickname “Dicky” Durbin.  another appearance of “Plussed it up”.  “Senate rolled us” makes another appearance.  Democrats are all about identity politics.  Repeated Politifact disproved hyped up DACA plus numbers 800,000 leads to 5 million.  Went back to his talking points about how India and China have grown through liberalization of free markets.  Said Democrats are trying to “out-moralize us”  The only thing they (Democrats) won’t do is capitalism.  The left is horrified that people are getting rich.  Our cookbook is better in every way.   The eponymous “Left” that Brat always speaks of makes many appearances in this interview.  No citations on where the point that THE LEFT is horrified about people getting rich.  Actually I think that’s the goal for all. . . .

Kennedy – Fox Business.  Basically same talking points.  Blames Senate for everything.  “Face plant” and “Plus-up(is it hyphenated?” make appearances.  Continues w/ the use of moniker “Dicky” for Dick Durbin.
